Web-Training about the basics of frequency analysis

When analyzing measurement data, you have to make decisions for which you need signal analytical knowledge: For example, to select the correct FFT window function you need to evaluate whether you have periodic, transient or even stochastic signals in your measurement task. Another example: To get a suitable overlap you want to select the frequency analyses for non-stationary analyses, such as a speed run-up.  In this context, it is interesting how you can estimate transient signal components (e.g. short-time resonances in the spectrum) in fast, non-stationary measurements.

Selected training contents

At the beginning of the web training we analyze a run-up measurement which you can follow on your computer. In this exercise we will address the most important parameters relevant for signal analysis, such as sampling rate, block length, frequency resolution, step size. You will get a first impression of which signal analysis topics are important. After this introductory exercise, we cover the individual topics step by step in modules building on each other.

Morning 1:

Introduction and Signal Classification 

  • Inspection of important signal analysis parameters using a run-up measurement
  • Signal classification and excitation types

Acquisition of Raw Time Data 

  • Signal sampling and transition to Discrete Fourier Transformation (FFT)
  • Signal quantization (measurement ranges for measurements)

Morning 2:

FFT Block Parameters 

  • Practical consequences and rules of thumb from the FFT (including the example in PAK)
  • Energy concept and Auto Power Spectrum (APS)

FFT Window Functions 

  • Mode of operation of rectangle and Hanning windows (including examples in PAK)
  • Amplitude accuracy (Flattop window)

Morning 3:

Overall level, Evaluation of a run-up (instationary measurement)

  • Overall level calculation
  • Evaluation of a run-up as an example for an instationary measurement (recommendation for the standard evaluation with 50% overlap of the FFT analyses)

Introduction into Filtering with PAK

  • Filter in the frequency domain
  • 3 rules of thumb for filtering with PAK in the time domain with FIR and IIR filters


PAK basic course and safe handling of the basic functionalities of the PAK graphic definition
