We didn't just find the interfering frequency—we could see it live on the 3D model.

.

Initial situation & relevance

In numerous development processes—from automobiles to building acoustics—the precise
localization and quantification of sound sources is essential. Unwanted noise not only leads to rework, but also to dissatisfaction among end customers. Conventional methods quickly reach their limits here: too costly, too inaccurate, too slow.

The solution: sound intensity measurement with real-time visualization – precise, compliant with standards, and fully integrated into the PAK family toolchain.

Challenge

Development and test engineers are faced with the following questions:

  •  Where does a disturbing noise really come from?
  • How strong is the actual sound power of individual components?
  • How can acoustic optimizations be implemented in a targeted and verifiable manner?

The answer requires more than simple level measurement—it requires directional sound intensity data in the room, ideally coupled with dynamic operating data and geometric data of the test object.

Solution approach & process

The sound intensity module of the PAK family allows directional sound measurements to be carried out quickly and intuitively – regardless of whether PP or PU probes are used.

The process in four steps:

1. Preparation
Selection & calibration of sensors (PP, PU, 3D), geometric modeling, measurement environment setup

2. Implementation
Movement of the probes over the area to be examined, synchronous recording of intensity, sound power and, if necessary, rotational speed

3. Analysis
Display as a third-octave spectrum, real-time visualization on the 3D mode

4. Derivation
Clear identification of sources of interference and targeted derivation of optimization measures

Results & customer benefits

  • Reduction in development time
  • Accelerated troubleshooting – no detours through trial and error
  • Improvement in acoustic performance
  • Cost savings through reduced rework

Typical areas of application

  • Automotive / Aerospace: Leak detection, NVH optimization, component testing
  • Building acoustics: Measurement of sound insulation of walls, windows, doors (DIN EN ISO 15186-1)
  • Acoustic research: Validation of simulations, analysis of complex source distributions
  • Determination of product sound power during operation in any sound field by measuring sound intensity

⭐️ Key Features

  • Real-time measurement with PP and PU technology
  • Area-based visualization on 3D-objects
  • Integration with robotics for automated measurement tasks
  • Link to operating data (e. g. speed)
  • Compliance with DIN EN ISO 9614-1/2

Conclusion

The sound intensity module from the PAK family not only provides precise data, but also makes acoustic problems visible—live, reproducible, and actionable. For everyone who wants to not only hear noise, but also understand it.
